4 Apps For Finding Local Events

By Madison White on November 17, 2019

Everybody wants to get involved in the best that their city has to offer. Picture it: trivia nights, public dance parties, light displays, artistic events, pop-up concerts. Some people may assume that to have fun and enjoy the city, you have to spend a lot of money, but this simply isn’t true. Whether you’re a local who just wants to find something new to do, or a new-comer looking to find the right crowd for you, there are often loads of free or cheap events happening around cities every weekend if you know where to look.

So how do I find these events? I’m glad you asked. As a college student, you may already be on the pulse of what is happening on your campus or put on by student associations. While these are cool events and often low-cost, you may be looking to expand your horizons a bit beyond the university’s reach. To do this, you’re going to need some tools to help you seek out and find the best events in your city.

Eventbrite

You may already be familiar with this app if you’ve attended some events before. Lots of people use Eventbrite to disperse tickets and regulate how many people attend the event, even if the event is free. It is very easy to use and often only requires your name and email to register for events unless you have to pay for said event. The interface is very clean and simple to use with clear directions and information about the event. If you’re someone who hosts events, Eventbrite may be a great way to reach more people as well and organize your event.

Beyond just signing up for things you already know about, you can browse other events that are happening in your city via Eventbrite. It will sync to your local address and showcase events happening in the near future. You can browse events by the date they are held or the category that they fall under like Food & Drink, Music, and more.

Songkick

If you’re someone who loves live music events, Songkick may be the app for you. With so many different ticket-sellers around, it may be difficult to wade through the websites and figure out who is playing and when. Luckily, there’s an app that sorts that for you.

Songkick is also innovative in that it synchs to your Spotify or Apple music account and shows you upcoming, nearby concerts of artists that you listen to. This way, you aren’t getting a bunch of information that you don’t want or care about. Beyond just browsing concerts, you can also do other things like see entire tour schedules, compare ticket prices, and even buy tickets through the app.

DoStuff

If you live in a major city, DoStuff may just be the app you’re looking for. This app has a team of locals that works in each city represented on the site so you know that you’re getting stuff that locals like and enjoy, not just things some corporate businessman has planned. Unlike some other apps that just focus on one area of entertainment, DoStuff features local events of all sorts. It displays the key information you need to attend that event on the app and allows you to browse by category if you want to.

The downside to this app is that if you don’t live in a major city, then you’re out of luck, though it may be a good option if you’re visiting a large city in the future.

Facebook Local

As a young college student, Facebook may have fallen off your radar as more and more demographics of people began using the app. Don’t be so quick to write off the app entirely though. Facebook is a really great way to find local events, especially those run by local and small businesses.

Many small businesses run their own social media accounts and rely on sites like Facebook to spread the word rather than hiring big business executives to do it for them. In fact, because it is one of the only widespread apps with an event feature, it may be the only place that they advertise their event. Because of this, you may be missing out on a lot of fun, unique events because you’ve written off Facebook.

Another reason that Facebook events are helpful is because it allows you to display your interest in an event which details crucial information to the host. You can also see if any of your friends have shown interest in the event and then make plans to go together.

Whichever app you choose to use for your event searching, you’ll probably be surprised at just how many amazing and low-cost events are out there. These kinds of things are great for discovering untapped passions, meeting exciting people, and learning something new.
