5 Ways to Use Snapchat for Recruitment

By Christine Ascher on June 26, 2017

Social media is not merely a platform to use for connecting with your friends and family; it can actually come in handy in the hiring process. This may not be surprising when it comes to Facebook, where you can create company pages and look into potential employees, but you may be surprised to find that other, newer platforms can be useful as well.

Snapchat, in particular, can provide you with some unique advantages when reaching out to younger students that can help set you apart from other recruiters.

Siofra Pratt, a writer for Social Talent, explains that “along with other visually based social media channels like Instagram, Snapchat is slowly but surely becoming an incredible vehicle on which to present and show off your employer brand to potential candidates.”

Use these tactics to make Snapchat an essential tool in your recruitment process.

Appeal to Younger Candidates

The popularity of Snapchat among college students means that, in implementing it for recruitment purposes, you’ll definitely draw in a younger crowd. If you want to appeal to younger potential employees for entry-level positions, this is the way to go. You’ll get a lot of traffic from college students who are starting to job hunt, meaning you’ll have a better chance of snagging some high-achieving students entering the workforce for the first time.

Give a Glimpse Into Daily Life in Your Company

For individuals and companies alike, your Snapchat story is a way to showcase your day-to-day life. Have some of your employees take Snapchats throughout their day and post them to your company’s story. This will allow any potential candidates watching to get an idea of the company culture in addition to seeing first-hand some of the regular tasks that employees complete.

You can even create a series of stories that showcase different positions within the company; for instance, have someone who works in PR take over the company Snapchat for a day to highlight what they do, then the next day have an employee in sales do the same. This will give candidates an overall picture of your company and how each department works together, and will also allow them to learn more about what they can expect in their chosen field.

Make sure what you’re posting is what you want to be reflected; for instance, if you want to show that your company is lively and collaborative, you could post a quick video of some fun brainstorming techniques that you use. Avoid posting anything too serious — it is, after all, rather boring to watch a video of someone working quietly at a desk — but, at the same time, make sure you don’t give the impression that all your employees do is goof off. Find a good balance by showing your employees having fun while working, rather than one or the other.

Show Off Your Company’s Cool Perks

The little things that your company does for its employees, like free lunch on Fridays or organizing work outings, can help set you apart from other companies that are recruiting from the same pool of candidates. Successful and motivated college students will be looking into more factors than simply earning potential when they start applying for jobs. They’ll want to find a position that they’ll enjoy.

For this reason, any company perks that you offer are fair game to advertise as a way to bring in job applications. Use Snapchat as a way to showcase these perks and events so that anyone looking to apply can see what you have to offer. Pratt even suggests using Snapchat as a way to give potential employees access to live events. She explains that in doing so, you will help your viewers to “feel like they were there and make them feel they were involved.”

Whenever you’re hosting a big conference or company event, use Snapchat to highlight it for candidates.

Advertise for Recruiting Events

When you have a major recruiting event coming up, you can use Snapchat as a means of (free) promotion. Introduce the event and continue to hype it in the days leading up to it. Then, on the day of the event itself, you can post content of it to allow candidates to see what they’re missing out on if they aren’t there. In addition to giving candidates another way to find out about recruiting events and therefore increasing the number of people who attend, this may also convince other candidates to attend events in the future.

Post Information for Candidates

While there are a lot of ways you can have fun with Snapchat (for instance by showing candidates all of the fun events you hold), it also has its practical uses. You can use it to promote open positions and can even post helpful information about how to apply. GrubHub, for instance, “used Snapchat Stories to post a six-image slideshow to explain how interns could apply.”

Compared to a traditional website, Snapchat is an easier and more entertaining way for candidates to receive information. In addition, by posting this on Snapchat you’re providing more opportunities for people, who may not otherwise be interested, to come across information about your company.
